Can You Achieve Hydrophobicity & Oleophobicity Without PFAS? Yes—But Here's What You Should Know

By Geoff Wylie

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly known as forever chemicals, have long been the industry standard for imparting both hydrophobic (water-repelling) and oleophobic (oil-repelling) properties to surfaces. Their effectiveness is hard to match—but so is their environmental persistence. As regulatory pressure increases and environmental concerns mount, many companies are actively seeking safer, sustainable alternatives to these fluorinated compounds.  Additionally, many insurance companies will no longer cover shipments of products that contain PFAS and legal departments in some major companies have mandated the removal of PFAS-containing products from their facilities. This has led many organizations to make immediate changes in product formulations to eliminate PFAS.

The good news? Hydrophobicity without PFAS is absolutely achievable. Today’s advanced chemistries, like RXA™ and SQS™, offer impressive water-repellent performance across a range of applications. In many cases, PFAS-free alternatives can deliver water contact angles that rival or even exceed those achieved with PFAS.

But oleophobicity (oil repellency)? That’s the challenge.

Most non-fluorinated technologies fall short when it comes to repelling oils, greases, and other low-surface-tension contaminants. This loss of oleophobic performance is one of the key trade-offs when moving away from PFAS, and it's where many alternatives fail to meet expectations.

While many PFAS-free chemistries deliver solid hydrophobic performance, few can truly compete when it comes to repelling oils, fuels, and other hydrocarbon-based contaminants. That’s because achieving oleophobicity requires modifying the surface energy in a very specific way—something PFAS historically excel at due to their unique fluorinated structure.

However, as regulations tighten and the risks associated with forever chemicals become impossible to ignore, innovation is stepping up to meet the challenge. Modern chemistry, like OCM™ for example, are paving the way for next-generation surface treatments that are both hydrophobic and oleophobic and compliant with global regulatory frameworks—including REACH, EPA, and upcoming PFAS bans in North America and Europe.

The Future is PFAS-Free—and Performant

Whether you're formulating protective coatings, durable cleaners, or advanced textiles, you no longer have to choose between performance and responsibility. PFAS-free may not necessarily mean compromise—not when you work with the right technology.  At Win Chemicals we’re committed to helping formulators, manufacturers, and brands make an intentional transition away from forever chemicals, while preserving the oil and water repellency their customers expect.
